Stories from Äkäslompolo

On First of May eve, people gather to celebrate spring in the so-called at normal time (without covid). The eve of our First of May began with remote working and we had plans in the evening to climb the Kellostapuli to celebrate the beginning of May. The weather was frosty even during the day, so we left the planned picnic...

We travelled to enjoy sunny spring skiing in Äkäslompolo in the end of April. Unfortunately, we didn't have no vacation, but luckily there were a possibility to work remotely.

During the sunny and frosty weather in February, I hiked couple of times to the Fell Kellostapuli to admire the scenery and snowy trees. The snowy landscape was breathtakingly beautiful. While I walked through paths, I admired the beauty and purity of nature even out loud. That beauty attracted me so much.

At the beginning of February, we did an another tour of Northern Finland, first to Äkäslompolo for a maintenance visit and from there to my Mother and to my home region.

January moods

January began in a waiting mood. Before Christmas, there had been only a little snow in both southern and northern Finland and the first skiing trip had been just a dream. But after the New Year, it started snowing more. Luckily, December's train tickets to Kolari had been moved to the beginning of January.

For the autumn colours holiday, we packed our own mountain bikes with. The idea was to utilise your own bikes and see if we could drive with them on the challenging routes of Äkäslompolo.

Inspired by the colours, we went on an evening walk, where we experienced several different nature trails and natural wonders at the same time: fells, rocky outs, forests, groves and fell streamlets. Even though we "just" hiked round the Kellostapuli Fell, there were very different kind of landscapes and nature miracles on the same route. This...

A lot of stories have been told about Lapland's autumn colours and beautiful photographs have been shared every autumn. Our first autumn colours adventure to Äkäslompolo finally came true this year.

You can see Kellostapuli from the village of Äkäslompolo as a rocky extension of Ylläs and Keskinen laki (Middle Peak) landscapes of fells. In the winter Skistar image, the Kellostapuli glows in the background in the first snow.

Already in June there were signs that there might become a very good berry harvest in this year. In the beginning of summer the weather was warm and also rainy and there were lots of mosquitoes as pollinators. Early in July we heard many news that berries could be a lot. And that started to raise our cloudberry fever.
